The bearings inside of your pump cannot be lubricated because they most likely as what they call “sealed bearings” not shielded bearings. For more information on the difference between seals bearings Vs shielded bearings please check out: Shielded Bearings Vs Sealed Ball Bearings
Motor Bearings Are Making Noise / Need To Be Replaced
If your Cal Spa Dually pump is leaking there is are few places that it can leak from.Usually if you have some mechanical ability and skills you can make these repairs yourself with basic hand tools and parts. The following list with explain you where the spa pump will leaky, why it will leak and how you can repair the leak. Another option is to also bring your pump down to a local electric motor repair / pump shop to have it repaired and serviced by a Cal Spa certified repair center.
Seal Is leaking:
Inside of your Cal Spa pump between the “wet end” / volute of your pump and the electric motor is something called a mechanical seal. If you have a Dually your pump will have two mechanical seals since the dually spa pump has two volutes and two impellers. You can buy a new mechanical seal and then replace it with some basic hand tools. The mechanical seals usually cost between $9 – $20 each depending on the actual model number of your pump. The Cal Spa Dually pump actually came with two different seals and depending on the model and serial numbers will determine what seal number you will need to buy.
Spa Pump Discharge Connection Leaking:
On the Cal Spa Dually pump you will have two discharge unions that have rubber o-rings inside of them to prevent the to plumbing parts from leaking. If these o-rings go bad which they can after many years of use, you will have to replace them. Sometimes the union collars may just be loose and you can tighten them and then the leak will stop.
If your discharge unions are leaking, you will want to shut the pump off and then inspect the unions. Check the unions to make sure that they are not dry or cracked. If they are you will want to replace them.
Leaking Spa Pump Volute Drain Plugs
On each end of the pump volute are winterizing drain plugs that you can remove when the pump is not running so you can drain the pump down if need be. Sometimes there drain plugs loosen from the vibration of the Dually pump of they were just not tight enjoy in the first place. Take a pair of channel locks and make sure the are tight. You also can remove them and re Teflon tape the threads.
Cal Spas Dually Pump Impeller Removal & Replacement
If you want to remove the impellers from your Cal Spa Dually pump, you will need two strap wrenches and also some sockets. The most important thing to remember is that each impeller is going to be removed in the opposite way. One impeller has left handed treads and the other one will have right handed threads.
To remove your impeller, you will first want to remove the volute from each end of your pump. Then you will see the impeller on each side. Using two strap wrenches working against each other you will be able to remove the impellers.
The Pump Is Running But Not Pumping
In rare cases if your spa pump is running and not pump water, this ,means one of two things. Either your spa pump is not primed and is “air locked” or the impeller has sum off of the shaft.
Check the spa pump to make sure it is primed. If you are sure that the spa pump is primed then your impeller has most likely cracked and spun off of the motor shaft. You will need to replace the impeller and mechanical seal if this has happened to you.
